Transcript: Earthquakes in San Francisco the three big earthquakes that happend were: Tejon Pass in 1857 (magnitude 7.9), Owens Valley in 1872 (magnitude 7.8), and Tomales Bay in 1906 (magnitude 8.3) San Francisco,California U.S.A .Even though there are alot of Earthquakes in San Francisco we think its a pretty good place to attend college. On average, only one earthquake happends every year. Thats a possibility of 2.73% of happening in one day! To us thats not a big danger. But there is tiny tremors everyday Fault Line The thing that causes earthquakes to happen in San Francisco is the San Andreas Fault line. It slides against each other and causes earthquakes to happen. The San Andreas Fault is a place where two tectonic plates touch, the North American and Pacific Plates. The plates are continually moving but where the touch each other, they get stuck. As the other plates moves, the stuck parts deform like compressing a spring so they build up stress in the rocks along the fault. When the rock breaks or slips, the suddenly plates start to move, causing an earthquake. The San Andreas Fault Line streches more than 800 miles. Safety Action Plan To make sure your safe during an unexpected earthquake please do the followingIf indoors:DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there is no desk, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch inside corner of the building. If outdoors:Stay there. Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. New Technology Seismologists use a Richter scale. It is used to measure the intensity of the earthquake. It measures the intensity by also working with a seismograph. It gives magnitudes from -2.0 which is being the smallest of them all to 10.0+ which is epic! We used sites from Ms. Totten's site. We used these: http://www.ready.gov/earthquakes, http://www.sanandreasfault.org/, http://www.buzzle.com/articles/richter-scale-for-kids.html . We also used the books that Ms. Wipf handed out to us. Also our notes on earthquakes! Attending College in San Francisco Refrence list By: Rey, Alejandro, and Jiovanni San Francisco, California

Transcript: San Francisco's Industries By: Josh Mone' Negatives Shipping Industry A negative of the shipping industry is that it brought over the cholera epidemic to San Francisco. The rapid population growth due to the Gold Rush quickly outstripped the cities infrastructure including its sanitation. Taking care of the sick used to be the states responsibility but the states devoted that responsibility to the counties during the outbreak of cholera. This epidemic set the precedent for the hospitals in California’s counties today. Another negative of the shipping industry is that it brought over the plague to San Francisco. This plague lasted from 1900-1904. A part of Chinatown was quarantined while the leaders of the city attempted to decide what to do. The city finally got rid of the plague in 1905. The plague caused the people of San Francisco to bury their citizens outside the city limits because they believed it helped transmit the disease Home Industry On April 18, 1906 an earthquake hit San Francisco that resulted from a rupture of the San Andreas fault. The earth quake was measured by USGS and measured a 7.8 on the Richter Scale. Fires burned out of control for days, water mains ruptured and the earthquake destroyed 80% of the city. The fire was fueled by the housing industry building the houses out of wood and unstable. This let the fire burn longer and let more things catch on fire once it got started. Transportation In the late 1800's San Francisco revolutionized an invention of cable cars. The purpose of these machines was to let people travel around faster and over steep hills. The cable cars were invented by Andrew Smith Hallidie. The cars though were very dangerous because they had no retrictions and many people died. Also later on San Francisco became corrupt and became a political machine which forced its workers to vote for who their boss wanted. California Gold Rush Mining Industry The California Gold Rush started in 1848 and led to a huge population boom. In less than a year from January 1848 to December 1849 the population of San Francisco increased from 1,000 to 25,000 people. The Gold Rush caused San Francisco to become the biggest city west of the Mississippi River. This rapid growth also brought over Chinese immigrants who worked in the gold mines and later on the Transcontinental Railroad. The rapid growth also complicated the cities planning efforts and caused narrow streets that still cause problems even to this day. Shipping Industry The shipping industry was a positive for San Francisco. The shipping industry brought over many goods and people to San Francisco. The shipping industry brought over the Chinese immigrants to the U.S. who helped in the San Francisco gold mines and also helped on the Transcontinental Railroad. The shipping industry also helped with other industries by supplying them with goods. The shipping industry was such a success that ships would have to wait for days in the harbor to unload their goods and passengers. Positives Transportation The transportation industry was positive to San Francisco. Cable cars were helpful to the growth of San Francisco and its progress as a city. The cable cars allowed the residence to climb up the steep hills of San Francisco and connect the new residential developments. The cable cars were invented by Andrew Smith Hallidie. The cable cars helped the transportation industry become successful in San Francisco. Shipping Industry bringing over goods and people.
