Transcript: Unexpected Findings Boys/Boys Interaction Our group was observant and non participant. The children's ethnicity composed of White and Hispanic. We presumed the age group varied from 3-10 years old. All children that were present at the park were included in our observations; we did not focus primarily on one particular group. We took into consideration the influence that parents had on their children. Our topic was to observe children's interactions in a playground setting. We payed close attention to the style of interaction and why the interactions occurred the way it did. Some of the data we collected contradicted the ideal expectations. Girls were very isolated within each other and rarely interacted with boys. Within boys/boys interactions we did not expect there to be one dominant leader throughout the duration of stay and play. Within boy/girl interactions, a boy interpreted the interaction as competition; challenging his gender Parents have an enormous influence on the child and what is expected of them. Transcript: The main thing we noticed with the younger aged kids was that there wasn't much of a gender gap in interactions. All the kids seemed to be playing along with each other, without paying attention to any stereotypes or differences we see today. For example, all the kids were playing tag, or swinging around on the swings, but together; there was no groupings or cliques based on gender. The kids were grouped by interests, and didn't recognize the stereotype of what boys do and what girls do. giggly cliques - not all together in one group less active games (hopscotch, hand games) or sitting down talkative whispering socially orientated Girl / Girl Interactions Question 1 3 Theories Our presentation will cover our findings on the interactions between kids on the playground.
