About The Author About The Author The singer of Country Roads is John Denver although the song was originally written by Taffy Nivert and Bill Danof. John was born in Roswell, New Mexico on December 31, 1943. John made about 300 songs, mostly country and acoustic guitar music. He had 33 albums and singles that were Gold and Platinum in the U.S with an estimated 33 million sales. He died in a plane crash on October 12, 1997. The Songs Meaning The song was written about the Clopper Road in Maryland and its winding, twisting roads which Bill and Taffy were taking to get to a family reunion which is why they say "Country roads, take me home." The country roads are taking them home, maybe to their family which they refer to as their home. While writing the song they were thinking of the country roads that they grew up around and the landmarks they lived around. They refered to West Virginia as "Almost Heaven" as they sung about the landmarks even though some of the places they sung about in the song aren't in West Virginia.. The Songs Meaning Why the Song was Written Why the Song was Written In 1970 Billy Danoff and Taffy Nivert got inspired to make the song by Clopper Road in Maryland when driving to a family reunion. They wrote the song when they got bored during the drive. The song was about the winding roads and the land around them. But during making the song they had a problem. The problem was that Maryland didn't fit into the song because it had too many syllables, so they chose West Virginia because it sounded better. Later in the year John met up with them and they spent a whole night re-writing and re-arranging the song. John then performed it that night. He released the song in the album Poems, Prayers & Promises in 1971. Bubble 9: What's The Meaning? Bubble 10: References Values and Norms This song speaks to the idea of the home as a source of comfort, stability, and security. This song can be related to agents of socialization in that it illustrates how family, the most primary of socializing agents, can provide us with a sense of belonging and grounding (Trisha De Coeur, 40). The song illustrates how different agents of socialization, such as memories and sentiment, can provide us with a sense of identity and a connection to our past. As my family grew up together we shared similar values, especially quality time doing activities like fishing and hiking together. Related to this song these values were cherished and solidified outside of the city where we were together enjoying nature. Agents of Socialization Nuclear Family Country Roads Take Me Home is a song about returning home to a beloved home and family. The lyrics produce a sense of the warmth and safety of which a nuclear family home would accompany. (Trisha De Coeur, 64)The song speaks to the happiness of coming home to a loving family and spending time with those you love. For me the nuclear family would apply because I have two opposite sex parents, as well as there dependant children myself and siblings. Not to say others family types couldn't relate to this song but in the country it is known for families to be the nuclear type. Canadian Family Structures Emotional Nature: Learned and Maturity Emotions Emotions relate to this song because through the lyrics “The radio reminds me of my home far away Drivin' down the road, I get a feelin' That I should've been home yesterday,” it Deals with feelings of regret, longing or a nostalgic sad feeling. Through the course we learned these emotions are typically maturity feelings as you experience them on your own growing up, although nostalgia is an emotion you learn to have after you miss something or have memories of something in the past. (Glugosh, Course Lectures) Social background Social Backgrounds relate to this song in the sense that the lyrics ”round her Miner's lady, stranger to blue water Dark and dusty, painted on the sky” could indicate a “dark and dusty sky” which could be generalized as pollution where there are many hard workers in factories, typically located in rural areas. This creates a stigma of a lower social class meaning lower income in the countryside. (Trisha De Coeur, 177) Ascription and Inequality This song “Country Roads Take Me Home” relates to the course study of Abraham’s Hierarchy of Needs, specifically “Self Actualization” because it is about reaching one's full potential including creative activities (Trisha De Coeur, 71). For me, I find the happiest times and activities are those which are done in the great outdoors such as camping, kayaking, fishing etc. These activities that allow me to acheive creativity are commonly found outside the city near farmland and cottage country where the whole songs theme is set and oriented around. Hierarchy of Needs (Self Actualization) Abraham Maslow Free Range Parents Parents Free range parents relate to the song "Country Roads Take Me Home" as a metaphor for wanting to provide a safe and secure environment for their children to explore and grow as individuals. The imagery of the song, with its rolling hills and winding roads, may create a sense of freedom and adventure for these parents, who strive to give their children the opportunity to explore their own interests and develop their own sense of self. This allows for kids to express their desires without always being told what and not what to do (Glugosh, Course Lectures). I am not socially isolated but rather I chose to distance myself from the large crowd and do things on my own. Similar to living in the country, it is less populated and has less social interactions. In the city it is a compact place where you cannot go without seeing someone, everything seems clustered, not my cup of tea. In this course we learned about social isolation and how individuals may Why
