Butterfly Garden

Transcript: Soil: Cleaning Up! Spring: Location & Why? We are going to plant our butterfly garden next to the outdoor classroom. This way when the classes go to the outside class room they can visit the garden and observe the butterflies. Marley, Avery, Tasha The soil we are going to purchase comes in 1 cubic foot and we are going to buy 15 bags, to cover our 6x6 garden at 4in tall. The soil total cost of the soil will be $45.00 at $3.00 a bag. We are going to purchase 20 Buddleia Bushes, and 400 Cosmos seeds. It is $4.09 per plant for the Buddleia Bushes so in total, $81.00. Then, 400 Cosmo seeds in total going to be $8.00. For all of the Summer flowers it is going to be $89.00. Problem: Maintenance Plan: To solve this issue we are going to plant a butterfly garden, to attract many different species of insects and specifically butterflies. We plan to maintain the garden, when we go out to the outdoor class room, or make a class based on maintenance of the pond, and have our butterfly garden included into the lesson plan. Butterfly Garden Bricks: The Build! Plants: Solution: We are going to plant fall, summer and spring flowers so that the butterflies will always have food, in all seasons. In total the flowers will cost $120.00. We are going to be purchasing seeds to plant instead of the actual plants. Summer: Butterfly Garden Budget: For fall we are going to be purchasing 40 Lantana seeds at $12.00. As well as, 1,000 Aster seeds at $7.00. So in total we will be spending $19.00. There is an issue with diversity of species in the pond and around the pond, there isn't enough diversity. I have not seen very many visually appleaing flowers or any butterflies around the pond, any of the numerous times that we have been out there. Fall: We are going to purchase multiple types of butterflies to introduce into our garden. We are going to purchase 12 Painted Ladies for $66.00, 12 Cabbage Whites for $30.00, and 12 Monarchs for $90.00. In total we will spend $185 on the butterflies we will introduce. Flowers: $120.00 Soil: $45.00 Bricks: $57.00 Butterflies: $185.00 TOTAL: $407.00 We purchased plants, to plant and we are going to put landscaping bricks around our garden to keep people from stepping on it, and after all the plants have bloomed, we are going to release butterflies into the enviornment. We are going to put landscaping bricks around the garden because we don't want people stepping on our garden. We are going to buy 30 bricks to put around our 6x6 garden. The total cost will be $57.00 with each brick at $2.00 a brick. We are going to mow, pull up the weeds so they will not grow back and interfere with our plants and we will till the ground before placing the soil. For Spring we will be purchasing 60 Asclepia seeds. The seeds will be $10.00 in total. Those are the only flowers we will be purchasing for spring because the abuddleia Bushes will as well bloom in the Spring as Summer. Butterflies:

Transcript: To solve the problem, we are going to plant flowers that attract butterfly. And we are going to purchases butterfly to release in the spring time. They will pollinate the flowers and will help the ecosystem grow. The cost of the Flowers Placement of flowers Why we picked these butterflies Total cost of the whole project By Jazmine, Bradyn, Abbi, Addison The Monarch butterfly is the most common butterfly. The Black Swallowtail has a large area that is eligible for habitat and will add more variety to the nature around the pond. The Pipevine Swallowtail has a general habitat and the pond seems to be a decent area. Also, the Pipevine Swallowtail will add diversity to the pond. This new garden will allow the students to start different projects involving the butterflies and the garden. The student would have a fun new project that would help out with the biology classes. Projects and Students. Solution The problem is, that around the pond there is not enough butterflies to pollinate the flowers. There are not as many flowers as there could be. The area is becoming overgrown with plants that are not so appealing to the students, and the flowers are dying. Problem We are going to have four different types of flowers. These flowers are a good food source for the butterflies. Snapdragons - Red, they bloom in the spring through the fall $5.99 for 100 seeds of red Cornflower - Blue, food for the butterflies $ 5.49 for 1000 seeds Holly Hock - Purple bloom in the spring through the fall, food for the butterflies $5.49 for 500 seeds of purple Butterfly bush - To attract and keep the butterflies around $ 5.49 for 500 seeds The Community Cost of the Butterflies So the whole cost of the project will be $316.80. Leaving us with $183.20 for replanting flowers if they need replanting. The pink dots are where we are going to place our flower garden. The pink dots in the pond are the water lilies we are going to place to get them more food. The lilies will be donated. Info graphic Butterfly Garden Monarch - comes with 24 - $84 Black swallowtail - comes with 12- $54 Pipe vine Swallowtail comes with 12- $54 The students could do projects over the life of the butterflies, how they grow, and how they interact with the pond. It would give the teachers an opportunity to give another subject for the students to do instead of a project that the students may have not done well on in the past.

Now you can make any subject more engaging and memorable
