All men in the Home Guard brutally abused their powers The Home Guard was run by the Confederacy They only hunted deserters They disrupted peace in the South They robbed and threatened innocent civilians Cold Mountain Clip The Real Cold Mountain The river has a length of 125 miles. The bridge that crosses the Deep River is 7 miles long. Relating back to the Theme.. The Real Inman GOAL! The Real Deep River -The theme of redemption is seen numerous times throughout the novel. Inman is constantly searching for redemption. He is looking for an answer as to why he left the war. Until, he is reunited with Ada, he has not redeemed himself. The other major theme in the novel is, "the journey is worth the view on top or in the end." This plays a big role, being that Inman took this risk to find Ada. The risk payed off in the end. -Another theme explored in the novel is the effect of war on the human spirit as well as how the civilians lives were transformed during post war. William P. Inman, a confederate solder for the 25th Infantry Regiment in North Carolina, was the inspiration for Charles Frazier's Novel Cold Mountain. According to the author, William P. Inman was a former ancestor but his records show that he enlisted into the civil war in 1861 and was later wounded with a gun shot wound to the neck in 1864, at the Battle of Crater. After his wound, Inman's records stray off as he deserts from a hospital in North Carolina and does not return to the war. According to Inman family history, William was killed miles away from home by Teauge's Home guard with a friend that's last name was in fact Swangner. Relating Back to the theme.. The Battle of The Crater relates to the them of the "effect of war on the human spirit". The witness that saw what was happening in this battle was scared for life. The witness now sees in his mind "clods of earth weighing at least a ton, and cannon, and human forms..." (Civil War Trust). When this witness returned he was not the same man that he used to be, which can affect his family too. This battle in the war is going to affect him for the rest of his life and what life choices he may make. Created By: Kayla, Hanna, Kendra In Cold Mountain, the home guard exploits their powers as abuses their missions to capture and brutally kill deserters. Cold Mountain created a misconception on the duties of the organization when their main purpose was to protect Southern civilians rather than create disturbances. However, the Home Guard used their powers for the own personal gain and took advantage of innocent people. This is seen through the theme "the effects of war on human spirits" because the war not only affected those fighting in it but the innocent bystanders that had no affiliation with deserters. This is seen in the case of Sara when she is threatened by the Home guard for her food supply and when the Home guard kill Pangle, a friendly and well intentioned man, that meant no harm to the confederacy, Misconceptions in the novel In the book, Inman walks up the river and he spots a man named Veasey about to throw an unconscious woman into the river. Inman intervenes and saves this woman from dying. Veasey, a preacher, got the woman pregnant and decides that the woman's death would be better than facing the consequences of his scandal. Inman takes the woman home safely. He punishes the preacher by tying him to a tree and writing a explanatory note. This scene near the Deep River relates to the theme "redemption" because Inman tries to do good. He tries to redeem himself by saving this womans life and helps Veasey not do a sin that he will regret later. Since he can't help himself from remembering the past and what he has done, he instead tries to bring out the good in people and save them from sin. He doesn't result to extreme violence in this instance. Frazier shows how Inman's instinct to do the right thing remains strong. Cold Mountain Works Cited The Home Guard was not run directyly by the confederacy Their main purpose was to keep peace in the South between civilians They looked for slaves that escaped their estates as well as confederate deserters Each Home Guard had different morals and followed their own rules in the Civil War as each regiment were not connected BORDSEN, JOHN; Knight-Ridder Newspapers.
