This context encourages sensitivity and adaptability in therapeutic practices, fostering stronger connections and understanding diverse perspectives on mental health. Influence on Counseling Within My Culture Cultural Competence in Counseling Cultural values shape the way individuals approach counseling. A strong emphasis on collectivism may lead clients to seek counsel as a community rather than independently, affecting both the dynamics of therapy and the expected outcomes. Adapting counseling techniques to suit various cultural contexts is essential. Counselors must undergo training to recognize their biases and enhance their empathy towards clients' diverse backgrounds. Importance of Cultural Awareness Counseling in My Culture Barriers in Counseling My Cultural Background Cultural awareness is essential in counseling as it fosters empathy and understanding between the counselor and client. By recognizing cultural influences, counselors can tailor their approaches to meet the unique needs of diverse populations, enhancing the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Cultural stigma around mental health may hinder clients from seeking help. Counselors must be aware of these barriers and work to create an open and welcoming environment to encourage dialogue. Counseling practices in my culture tend to emphasize familial involvement and community support. Traditional approaches often prioritize harmony and respect for elders, which influences how individuals seek help and process their mental health challenges. Socioeconomic Status Disabilities Counseling Perspectives Disabilities are sometimes perceived variably across cultures. In my cultural background, there is both a lack of awareness and stigma associated with disabilities, necessitating an informed approach to counseling that promotes inclusivity and understanding. Socioeconomic status impacts access to resources and opportunities. My cultural perspective encompasses the challenges faced by individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, which informs my empathy and commitment to providing equitable counseling services. Understanding my cultural background is vital for effective counseling as it shapes my perspectives and influences my interactions with clients. Introduction to Cultural Counseling Understanding the role of culture in counseling practices is crucial for effective therapeutic relationships and interventions. Race and Ethnicity Gender and Sexual Orientation Cultural counseling serves as a vital framework for understanding the diverse backgrounds and experiences that influence individuals' emotional and psychological well-being. My race and ethnicity are fundamental elements of my cultural identity, impacting my worldview and experiences. Growing up in a multicultural environment has enriched my understanding of diverse perspectives and reinforced the significance of inclusion in counseling. Gender and sexual orientation significantly influence cultural identity and experience. Understanding the dynamics of gender roles and sexual orientation within my culture helps me navigate counseling relationships with sensitivity and awareness of potential biases. Religion and Spiritual Heritage Religion and spiritual heritage play a pivotal role in shaping beliefs and values. My cultural practices, influenced by my faith, guide my moral compass and impact my approach to counseling, particularly regarding ethical dilemmas and client wellbeing. Definition of Cultural Counseling Cultural counseling refers to the practice of providing support and guidance that takes into consideration a client's cultural background, beliefs, and practices. It aims to create a therapeutic environment that respects and integrates individual cultural identities into the counseling process. Cultural Perceptions of Substance Use Cultural attitudes towards substance use vary significantly, often shaped by historical, social, and spiritual factors. In some communities, substances like alcohol or cannabis may be accepted in moderation during social gatherings, while others may view any usage as taboo, influenced by religious or moral beliefs. Substance Use in My Culture 1 Understanding the nuanced relationship between cultural traditions and substance use reveals both historical practices and modern perceptions. Paraphrase Her, is about a break up Gary Soto had with a girl when he was seventeen, they meet up at a bar ten years later, and hung out remembering when they used to date, and even though they can never be together anymore they now know they can move on. How things work figurative language Oranges the first time i walked with a girl , i was twelve , cold and had two oranges in my jacket. December winter , cold enough too see my breath. As i walked toward her house, the one with the porch light that was never off . A dog barked at me until she came out taking off her gloves. She smiled and i could see her makeup , i smiled and led her down the street until we ended up in front of a drugstore. We entered and looked down the aisle , i asked if she wanted anything and she placed a chocolate on the counter and i placed 2 oranges down . The cashier and i locked eyes and she knew what it was about . We walked out into the cold of December , i took her hand and she unwrapped a chocolate and i peeled my orange , so bright compared to the scenery of winter someone might have though i had a fire in my hands. how things work paraphrase Gary Soto was one of the many young Mexican- American children growing up in a poor mexican hood in Fresno,California. His parents worked for the agricultural state doing typical work such as picking grapes , oranges and cotton for very little pay. A little after he turned 5 his father died due to a work related incident, this left his family too fend for themselves. Soon after they moved too a rougher part of because of financial reasons , because of this Gary was never really encouraged for his education and spent the time he did go to school chasing girls . This Spring, ten years later we see eachother and cross the bay to North Beach And you and i enter a bar to let go of our sorrow. I try to make you recall of all the times together but youve tried to forget . i take your hand and try to live my moment i never got at 17. Tonight no one cares, and i fail at my attempt, though im okay with what we've become. Drunk we pay and you hug me tight and send me walking slowly down a side street I arrive too a ticketed car and the inevitable begger ;"spare change." How things Work Oranges is about Gary Soto taking a girl out on a date trying too woo her but keeping in mind the way he's living at the moment he didn't have enough money too pay for what the girl wanted. Transcript: Motivational people MC football teaches many morals when it comes to life. As a former player we were taught that in order to stay on the team we have to change within ourselves and show the light of God. We had a team verse that said "Proverbs 27:17 As one piece of iron sharpens another, so friends keep each other sharp." This meant that we had to work together as one unit. If one person was slacking off then it made the whole team look bad. We had to learn how to keep each other accountable for our actions. We had to learn to trust God, not when it came to football but when it came down to our lives. We learned that football isn't everything. Yes, everyone loves to win but most people do not play it past high school. My coach would say "Enjoy what you have before you realize what you had is already gone." Cultural Background Presentation People who impacted MC Football. Opportunities for MC football I found a website titled Stanislaus County Assistance program. It states how the city is in need for many volunteer positions. Modesto is not the nicest city in California, according to RoadSnacks Modesto is ranked #9 worst city in California (2016). What I found that MC could do to help is graffiti clean up on the weekends. This would help show how MC is even more involved with e comm MC football as well is required to help serve the homeless of the city three times out of the year in order to stay on the team and keep scholarships. MC football has shown through the years that you can attend a private school to become successful academically, spiritually, and athletically. MC football was awarded a key to the city of Modesto in 2009 for their help around the community and for the impact our school has been for the less fortunate. Conclusion Motivational people References When I was still in middle school I looked up to certain MC football players who would motivate me to become a Modesto Christian Crusader. #44 Zach Sudfeld, graduated MC in 2005, Played for the Nevada wolf pack as tight end, got drafted by the New England Patiots in 2010, then got traded in 2012 to the New York jets, and is a second string tight end ths year. The picture to your left shows two former MC football players who not only played football for our city, but also defended our city and nation. Brock Andrew and Brandon Malone both served in the Marines. They both enlisted in 2012 and both got an honorable discharge for helping save their separate platoons from danger. In this picture they both are receiving purple hearts for their bravery and commitment to this nation. When I heard the news that they both were injured within a three month gap I was shocked. To know two football players I looked up to almost died made me realize how valuable life was. These two men impacted the hearts of our city and especially our school cause everyone knew them. These men are heroes and because of them they put an outstanding name upon MC football for their commitment they had in war for their brothers just like the commitment they had for their brothers on the football field. Modesto Christian School was founded in 1962 by Pastor Roy Blakeley. The school has 52 acres of land that supplies a preschool, middle school, and high school. Roy Blakeley wanted to create a school for his children and grandchildren to attend that gives a high education while with standing a Christian education. Overall, the student numbers from Pre K-12th grade combined is 500-700 students. The History of Modesto Christian Modesto Christian Football is not just a typical high school football team. No, we are a high school football team that cares about our community. Our culture is a group of 50 young men who commit their service and effort to their city. Our culture knows that in today's society not everyone is blessed with the opportunities and gifts we were given. God tells us to go through out the world and shine his light. By shinning his light we has a community must be there for one another and love one another in time of need. #2 Nate Sudfeld, He graduated MC in 2011, Played for the Indian Hoosiers as their starting QB, got drafted this year to the Redskins. Since 1965 there have been many events that have formed MC Football. In 1965 (the year the high school opened) Modesto Christians 8 man football team won their league, section, and state title. This helped impact MC Football because people saw the success within a year of being a team From 1985-1996 MC football won their league and section titles in all of those 12 consecutive years. 2000-2005 Modesto Christian won their league those 5 consecutive years but won no section titles, 2009 MC football won their league, section, and state title and this put MC back on the maps. In 2014 (the year I was a senior) our team won our league, section title, but fell short to a state title. Continuation on how MC Football has impacted the city around it.
